The National Council of Young Men's Christian Associations of the United States of America (generally shortened as the YMCA of the USA or simply The Y) is part of the worldwide youth organization YMCA.
Composition and foundation
It has 2, separate organizations with 10, branches working with 21 million men, women and children, to "strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility." It employs 19, staff and is supported by , volunteers, and YMCA branches have about 10, service locations.[1] The first YMCA in the United States opened on December 29, , in Boston, Massachusetts.
It was founded in by Captain Thomas Valentine Sullivan (–59), an American seaman and missionary.[2]
YMCAs in America is one of the largest charitable nonprofits in the United States, in terms of donations received from the general public, as listed by Forbes magazine.[3]
